Varkala, a calm and quiet hamlet, lies on the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram district. It has several tourist attractions that include a beautiful beach, a 2000-year-old Vishnu Temple and the Ashramam – Sivagiri Mutt a little distance from the beach. The Papanasam Beach (also called as Varkala Beach), which is ten kilometers away from Varkala, is renowned for a natural spring, which is considered to have medicinal and curative properties. A dip in the holy waters at this beach is believed to purge the body of impurities and the soul of all sins; hence the name ‘Papanasam Beach: Destruction of Sins’.
Other than this traditional and meaningful concept, Varkala beach is probably the main reason for most travellers to go to Varkala. It is a great beach to escape the crowds in Goa. It is also a great sustainable choice to avoid over touristy places and spread the tourist money elsewhere. Additionally, Varkala Cliff is a record of past changes in sea, soil, geological and nature which is called “Warkallai Formation”.
Talking about Varkala, aren’t we little curious to know how this came to existence? So , The place was also called Udaya Marthandapuram, commemorating the contributions of Udaya Marathanda Varma, a Travancore King, to the development of Varkala. The king in 1762 built rows of houses in the obscure sea side village of Varkala in order to make the local Brahmins settle here. This is how varkala became live.
